Villoresi Park, Monza
The unseen view of the Villoresi Canal
A growing city with a holistic approach considers the planet's health as important as individuals' health. The project leads to reflection on water management as an opportunity for virtuous dialogue with the natural ecosystem and reconnection with the people who live in it.
Located on the edge of Monza's historic centre, with a privileged view of the Villoresi Canal, the new park designed by Parcnouveau represents a fundamental part of the canal system and the cycle network that runs alongside it, as well as the Grugnotorto Park. This 12,000 sqm space integrates the urban and agricultural fabric of Monza, extending along a main axis that connects the Iperal shopping centre to the future multifunctional civic centre. With two main entrances, one commercial towards the roundabout and one naturalistic towards the canal, the park is easily accessible and usable throughout the day.
The project recovers the agricultural memory of Lombard town and enhances the waterfront; the park is designed to manifest sociality and biodiversity, two inclinations that public space has a duty to promote. To emphasise the character of spontaneity and ecosystem variety, the park's design includes a 600 cubic metre bio-lake, which, for hydraulic needs, also contributes to the management of rainwater by acting as a lamination basin. The lake surrounds a basketball court and a calisthenic area. It also surrounds a playground consisting of a large sandpit, with balance, climbing and water games, and slides and ropes arranged on the slope of a small hill, forming a natural amphitheatre.
The park, located 2.5 metres above canal level, offers impressive views of the Villoresi and culminates in a waterfront area designed for contemplation and connectivity. A wide variety of tree species contributes to the site's biodiversity and charm, producing a healthy ecosystem that encourages the presence of local fauna and provides shade and attractiveness for visitors.
